About: DJ cypher (AKA Jeffrey Weinstock) has been a club, radio, and internet dark music DJ since 1994. He has held residencies at BOUND DC, Contempt NYC, and BOUND Hartford, and is the host of the weekly goth/industrial/post-punk/intelligent electronica broadcast, DJ cypher’s Dark Nation Radio, which has been on the air since 2001. He also hosts the semi-monthly show, DJ cypher’s Psychobilly Family Power Hour. His guest spots have included Convergence X and 24, Endless Night (New Orleans), Ghoul School (Hollywood), and multiple appearances at Philadelphia’s Dracula’s Ball. When not DJing, Jeffrey is a college professor in Michigan with, at last count, 29 books to his credit on topics including the American Gothic tradition, ghosts, vampires, monsters, and The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
“I DJ because I’m passionate about introducing people to new music and supporting a scene that has been central to my life since the late 1980s. I approach putting together sets as a kind of puzzle, trying to work out which tracks pair well, when to switch tempos and styles, what kinds of transitions work best, and what is most likely to appeal to particular audiences. There’s quite a lot of variation in my sets, from cerebral electronica, old-school goth, and crunchy industrial to rockabilly, psychobilly, and horror punk. I particularly like to work with material influenced by ethnic traditions, from the East Asian flavor of my “Traveler” show to the Nordic folk influences on my annual “Dark Solstice” broadcast.
