about

I always work with a sense/need of balance in mind.

When I do an instrumental album, I work quasi simultaneously on an album or tracks with vocals.
With Jean-Marc Lederman Experience’s albums (where I invite singers to have a go at a common theme for all), I always start with a concept, a red line, something everyone could see and follow rather clearly.

I came out of the latest Jean-Marc Lederman Experience (“Letters to Gods and fallen angels”) with that need to rebalance: do something different and more prone to have tracks that would be darker, meaner, with less tangents into calm soundscapes and situations. Something that had less of a romantic vision of hope in the world giving the listener the feeling that, eventually, everything will be okay.

So, The Raven was born out of that: giving the singers, but also the listeners, a sense that, sometimes, things are not ok and things can be quite dark and somber and hopeless indeed…
Sounds pretty much like a Goth or an industrial common theme, non?

So, I started to compile old goth writings and poems and thought that it would be fun and ironic that these writings which were centuries old in most cases would be sung and recreated on very electronic and modern tracks. I send them to the esteemed singers and they were very keen to jump in and give their version of a poem that may have been written in an English field in 1734 or in Italy circa 1300 or in France in the dark ages…

And there you have it: old goth classic poems (Byron, Poe, Plato, Shelley, etc…) alongside some newly written (but right on the theme) 2021 songs. All this in a musical environment that uses sometimes classic instruments but followed immediately by a song that would use the latest in synthesizer technology or completely chaotic noise surroundings. You are taken from a somber forest to a deserted countryside or straight into the lab of Frankenstein just before you come out of Hell, meet with Odin’s mysterious messenger or travel at night with two scared and tired kids on a small boat, on a river. And, above you, on all the songs, there is that raven still hovering above.

13 songs or poems that remind us that, sometimes things are not ok but that maybe, frankly, they are not that bad and one can eventually smile and enjoy Art even when the context is dramatic.

I guess I failed to correctly address my desire to go all dark then :)
